"APS Member Consultation - Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of gender diverse and transgender people: Position Statement
The APS member consultation period is now open for the proposed position statement: Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of gender diverse and transgender people.
The statement outlines the APS position regarding psychologists and psychology professionals who seek to respond to the psychological needs of transgender and gender diverse people. In the statement, the APS advocates for transgender and gender diverse people to have access to safe and effective psychological care and to be treated with dignity, empathy, and respect always. Anyone seeking to transition and/or needing support with their gender should be able to access sufficient, timely, individualised, and high-quality psychological care. The APS also calls for more research in this area.
The APS Presidential Panel on assessment, support and therapeutic approaches for transgender and gender diverse people was established in 2022 to help guide psychologists in their practice with this client group. The panel has met regularly to examine issues of concern to the trans and gender diverse community and advise APS on the development of this position paper. The Panel has worked to ensure the APS’ position reflects a diversity of professional views and experience and that it is based on the available research and evidence.
Members are now invited to read and consider the position statement and provide feedback via our online consultation.
